Olympic Programme week 2

HARLOW SCHOOL SPORTS PARTNERSHIP – Olympic Celebration Programme week 2

The second week of the programme kicked off on Monday 2nd July with the largest event of the programme, the mini-Olympics which was held at and organised by Church Langley Primary School.  Over 250 year 1&2 children turned up to take part and even the sunshine made a rare appearance.  The mini-Olympics is a multi skills event which gives younger children the chance to throw, run and catch without being specific to any sport.

At the end of the event the two Olympic torches were passed onto the final leg of this journey and went from Kingsmoor to Pear Tree Mead and Latton Green to Henry Moore primary schools.

Up next was the annual gifted in PE day where every primary school sends 1 boy and 1 girl in year 6 to Mark Hall Sports Centre.  The day is a reward for the children who are chosen and at the sports centre they get the chance to try in detail sports they may not do much of at school.  This year all the activities were Olympic or Paralympic sports and the children took part in trampoling, wheelchair basketball, gymnastics and table tennis.

Next up was the year 5&6 tennis event which took place at Harlow Tennis Club and teams from Latton Green, Pear Tree Mead, St Nicholas and St Lukes all took part.  The morning saw all the children take part in tennis coaching sessions run by the club coaches and in the afternoon a competition was run in which St Nicholas came out on top as the winners.  The event was supported by Harlow College students who assisted with the coaching and acted as umpires in the afternoon.

On Friday 6th July our final event of the programme took place and saw 30 students from Passmores and Burnt Mill come to Mark Hall Sports Centre to take part in a Paralympic activity day.  The children all had the chance to receive expert coaching in table tennis, athletics, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

George Gardiner, Partnership Manger; Harlow SSP said “the last two weeks has been amazing.  Over 900 children have taken part from across all age ranges at school and the support we have received from other schools, clubs and coaches has been exceptional and we could not have done it without them, so massive thanks to all who have supported us”.
